What Is a 404 Error?

Robert: Hi, I’m Robert. I’m a Digital Marketing Strategist at Clix and I’m gonna talk to you about 404 errors.

A 404 error is when a page is not found on a website. This is completely natural. It happens all the time. It could either happen when someone types in an incorrect URL or when there’s a link to a page that doesn’t exist on your website.

An example of a 404 error would be if you had pizza.com and a URL or a page on pizza.com was pizza.com/pepperoni. Let’s say that you decided to change the URL of that page, pizza.com/pepperonipizza, then the slash pepperoni page, would anyone try to go there again, would give you a 404. That just means that it no longer exists. It’s not found.
On the same token, if someone had a link to that page, whether it was in a bookmark or if it was a link on another website, if they tried to click through to go back to pizza.com/pepperoni, they would be getting that 404 error.

Fortunately, this can be fixed very easily with a redirect. So, in this case, you would take pizza.com/pepperoni and redirect it to the new URL pizza.com/pepperonipizza.
If you don’t do this, then people will keep getting that 404. They might get confused. There may not be an easy way for them to get back to the site and back to the page they want to see. This is a pretty simple fix, but it does require a little bit of attention and it requires someone looking at these 404 errors when they’re registered to see whether they need to be redirected or not, and if so, where.

Well 404’s aren’t exactly a ranking signal to Google, they are important to fix and this is just because you don’t want links to your site out there on the internet, whether it’s in someone’s bookmark folder or whether it’s live on a website, especially if it’s live on a website, that don’t go anywhere or that gives someone an error because that makes it seem like your website is poorly managed. It makes it seem like you’re not on top of things. It’s something that needs to be fixed.
